Nokia N900 Internet Tablet Rumors

The Nokia N900 Internet Tablet hasn’t been officially announced yet but there are a lot of roumors about it.

Nokia N900 Maemo

Here are just a few of most important:

Nokia N810 N900 Internet Tablet

Nokia N810 N900 Internet Tablet

Nokia N900 will have support for Quad-band GSM, HSDPA, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

It will be powered by Smart Tablet 2008, based on Maemo.

On January 2009 Dr. Ari Jaaksi revealed a pre-alpha SDK of Maemo 5.

Some of the news are:

  • online anywhere with cellular connectivity over HSPA for broadband anywhere
  • powerful computing with TI OMAP3 processor – for better performance and better graphics performance
  • photo sharing with hi-def camera – imaging and photo-sharing
  • Nokia is now Gold Sponsor of Linux Foundation, has contributed code today for 3G/HSPA cellular (data) connectivity for OMAP3 to Linux kernel

As Nokia N800 and Nokia N810 were criticized about the big sizes, it seems the N900 will be a bit smaller, just like iPhone, with a 3.5″ display.

About the storage, Nokia may have 16GB internal storage capacity, as well as a miniSDHC slot to extend it to your needs.

The web browsing will be done using an Internet Browser from Opera, supporting all common standards.

This will be also used for streaming and sharing the videos from/to YouTube.

Of course there will be usual communication applications, like calling and messaging features (SMS, MMS),

e-mail, instant messaging and even Skype.

The Nokia N900 price will be around $750 and we hope to find it on store shelves in 2009.

Will this be enough to beat the competitors, like Apple iPhone and the Android G1?

What do you expect from the Nokia future tablet? We are waiting for your comments.

  2. Well… we want more info about N900, screenshots, fotos, dates

By Zaltair on Feb 10, 2009

  3. $750 ???

    Too big price for today.

    I won’t buy it more than $499

By SergeK on Feb 25, 2009

  4. An n900 with a smaller screen has very little interest for me. I like the n800/810 from factor but would like a larger screen in the same box…
$750 is also too high. netbooks are in the $400 range. To sell tables they should be in the same range

By Ed on Mar 5, 2009

  5. The form factor of the n810 was perfect. All it needed was 3G and voice in my opinion. I liked the size of it. (The 800 was a bit big, that’s true.)

    By Davide-NYC on Mar 14, 2009

  6. I want open source web browser, not that Opera thing.

By ar on Mar 22, 2009

  7. I have the n800.. no smaller screen …also 2 sdhc slots and not more than 400..bt..usb..debian..

By mwnl on Mar 23, 2009

  8. Pricepoint: this is far too high for the functionality. You can buy 2-4 n810s for that price. 2-4 ?! (US$320 on nokia.ca, US$200 on ebay “buy it now!” stores)

Faster performance and cellular connectivity are no doubt nice, but the smaller screen seems like a step backward. n810 seems fairly compact to me for a small flexible mini-PC that doesn’t need a proprietary contract, filesystem or ongoing service plan costs.

    Looks like I’m buying a n810 instead.

    By Ricky D on Apr 11, 2009

  9. I highly doubt it will cost $750, or use an Opera-based browser.

By Texrat on Apr 30, 2009

  10. It’s not the future N810. It is a whole new game. The key factor for N810 is its brilliant screen. There are many small-screen gadgets, but but N810 got the magic being small enough while having great screen. iPhone, Palm TX, etc can’t compete with N810. I agree – Nokia should keep the size, just add voice and ubiquitous data connection. Some more buttons could also help. Current 5-way is really poor.

    By Peter B on May 4, 2009

  11. i love my n800. i just hope the n900 is faster, has multi touch, better bluetooth edr/2.0/3.0, 64gb, megapixel camera with video. Keep the large screen please.

By davi on May 5, 2009

  12. If the screen size is reduced, I am gone faster than
you can say iPhone. Which, btw, is what I will be
    getting instead.

By Morten on May 8, 2009

  13. I really like my N800, but the rumoured N900 does not sound like a practical upgrade for my needs. I’d want a slightly LARGER screen, not smaller. And $750? Sorry, way too expensive!
For that kind of price, I’d switch completely and go with something like a Viliv S5. I nearly had myself talked into an OQO Model 2+ before OQO ran into trouble :-(

By Dave on May 12, 2009

  14. A smaller screen size would keep me from getting one. If I want a smaller screen size, I will just use my Blackberry or any other smart phone out there. The netbooks is what should concern Nokia about future internet tablets. If I see an Eee PC with touch screen before Nokia comes out with the next internet tablet, that is what I will get. Nokia needs to get the device on more store shelves also. Not many people outside the geek world knows about them.

  17. As others said before me, $750 is insane. My pockets are big enough for a 4″ device, reducing it to 3.5″ doesn’t add any value for my pockets, all it does is taking away valuable screen space (and making the keyboard [if it has any] even smaller). n810 with omap3 , gsm/3g and more storage would have been optimal :/

By martin on Jun 7, 2009

  18. 750, I don’t think so.
and by all means if screen is getting smaller there is no reason to get one.

By davidecr on Jun 14, 2009

  19. O.K., I’m getting an N810. $750 is a ridiculous amount to invest for a device that will be a dinosaur in a year or two. I’d rather go with the current dinosaur at a cheap price.

It’s too bad the pocket-sized internet tablet device market is getting squeezed out of existence — but, alas, most people seem to want the small-screen, iPhone-esque “smart” phone.

By Matt on Jun 18, 2009

  20. Nokia r releasing their divices like crazy. From e71, e75, e66, n97, n86…. Wow this is crazy. They need learn a thing or 2 from apple. Apple release only 1 iphone and ipod a year. I dont want to use n97 for a month and then a new device come out the next month to over shadow my very expensive phone like this.

By Nurranurra on Jun 28, 2009

  21. I also got the N800 and am happy with it. I’d only get the N900 if it would be affordable, had a better screen that wasn’t smaller and I also find the keyboard to be pretty negelctable… bigger screen, slimmer design, no keyboard, thats my suggestion, go tablet for real, Nokia!

By Michael on Jul 5, 2009

    —————————

Very awsome, but $750 is far to expensive, i guess $600 is a good price. I’m waiting to get my n900!

By Renato on Jul 31, 2009

  25. It’s true that the combination of a large screen (larger than 4″) and the 3G module isn’t easy to manage.
The risk to loose one of the specificity of the IT series (a quite comfortable screen), but also the lack of interest to offer a mobile communication for an object which won’t be easy to carry.
In my opinion, 180 gr is the maximum weight for a portable device and 150 would be better. It can really take the place of a good smartphone.
Perhaps the salvation will come from an excellent screen (amoled, with excellent reactivity) as a compensation of the size (I’m working with a WVGA 3.1″ amoled screen of the Samsung S8000 Jet: amazing) and from an full integration of smart magnifying function (not only in browser).
I also hope the excellent SIP client will be present (it disappeared from S60 3.2!).

    By I4U on Aug 7, 2009

  26. The $750 price is likely to the the price without a phone contract. Isn’t the Pre about that much without a contract? My guess is that it will be about $200 with a contract.

  27. Good comments all, way too high price for something that´s gonna be a dino in one or two years as someone said, same with the screensize; i have been waiting for a N810 with 3g connectivity long time enough now and it is a real diappointment to hear those stupid finn´s don´t understand that for those who´s looking for mid-like products like this the screensize is central, we are looking for a real on the go browser and it is strange that the market haven´t provided such yet (aigo, benq and the rest´s products isnt for sale anywhere but some southasian countries anyway). Same with idiots at SonyEricsson (i am from Sweden) , they are so stupid that they still manufactoring mobiles with wimax conn. , anyway, with 3,5 screen i won´t buy N900 for that price, until then i will buy a 200 dollar ipod touch 2:d gen. and use a MiFi like the Huawei’s E583X, or just stick to my Eee 901 GO… And one more thing; would it be possible to connect this product (the touchscreen one) http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/10/nanovisions-mimo-720-s-usb-secondary-display-is-slim-yet-toucha/ with a 3g phone and use the disply as a surfboard?

By MongoBongo on Aug 12, 2009

  28. Text wen wrong, what i meant was:

Same with idiots at SonyEricsson (i am from Sweden) , they are so stupid that they still manufactoring mobiles with extremely small sizes.

    And:

Samsung has one nice looking MID but it is only with wimax conn. which don´t work here in Europe.

By MongoBongo on Aug 12, 2009

  29. $750 not bad. paid that for my N95 2yrs ago. figure at that time $ 250 camera + $ 250 gps + $250 video camera + computer for light bookkeeping on the road + a really good phone with a direct in the sun readable screen while sailing…
the N800 i cant read the screen in the sun, hope I can with the 900…
    count me in :)

  30. First when i saw it, I imagine the center mirror in our car. Its almost the same in size but the price is good enought to get so many girls! hahahaha

By YOYONG on Aug 20, 2009

  31. Stop drooling and save your money, get a N810 (now discounted to around $150) and a 3 Skypephone for tethered 3G connection for around $50.

Maemo Linux is the iPhone killer – open source, open development tools and open distribution.

Hope Maemo 5 has Java though as this was a serious omission from Maemo 4.

  32. I’M SO BUYING THIS. DOWN with the IPHONE. AHHAHAH. ALL the nimrods with IPHONES, how do you like ur PATHETIC Resolution compared to 800×480 HUH!!! Iphone users can stay in their little happy bubble. Just WATCH as MAEMO and Android grow and squash Iphone’s marketshare. HA. How do you like THOSE apples. Only gripe i have is that capacitive screen would be nice + OLED!

By EC on Aug 26, 2009

  33. Wow…this sounds good!! i’m now using N97. but would like to use linux platforms….c’mon N900!!! i will buy u even if u r $1000….!!!

$750 is abit expansive but if it really is gona kill the iphone n others then ill buy it for $750

  35. i wont buy more than $200

By joe bilard on Aug 28, 2009

  36. $750..?? i think it still too expensive…
face it guys (read : Nokia) !!! u ‘re no longer number 1 smartphone manufacturer. even your n97 product is not accepted as enthusiasly accepted as your earlier communicator flagship in my country. so be very carefull in puting price on this stuff if you want to sale it, I’m from Indonesia BTW.

By Ahreey on Aug 29, 2009

  37. As a long-time N800 owner and a new Palm Pre owner, I could see the N900 replacing both of these devices, which I currently use for very different purposes.

As is always true… if I had only waited…!!

By Samatva Peace on Aug 31, 2009

  38. Looks great. I just wish it could be used in portrait orientation (like the iPhone and Palm Pre) as well as landscape, using an on-screen keyboard. It looks like portrair mode is only used for the phone function. I think the screen size is prefect and the resolution is just amazing, but it would have been nice to have it a bit thinner.

    By Jason404 on Sep 1, 2009

  39. $750 is unlocked, of course. But even so it’s TOO expensive! This is worth at most $500, and I wouldn’t buy it if it costs more than $400. Really…. my nokia 5800 already does everything I need (fast 3G, wifi, skypeout, everything). It’s already good with the firmware updates… And for $750 I would save some $$$ more and buy a ful features ultraportable. Seriously, sometimes, too much functionality is not good if it means an unreasonable price point.

By David on Sep 2, 2009

  40. i think i’ll never have one N900
and probably a N810 is more suitable for my little money that i love so much!

  41. $750 is toooooooooooooo high
i was about you change from N70 to advance but as i have heard this price now i think i need to change the Brand of cell phone which i have been using from last 10 year….

  42. $650 -$700!.. THis may be the end of my NIT purchases.. From the 770 then to the N810.. but the proce is way to high.. I think I’ll just keep my N810.. UNLESS the price goes down

  43. n900 has no WiMAX actually…

By dldc on Sep 14, 2009

  44. I have seen this device and felt this was awesome….after living with the S60 based phones all these years this product from Nokia is a rock star…atleast for me i will more that surprised and stunned to the speed of the application response, multitask handling the device response time and resistive touch screen are awesome what makes it more reliable and strong is the mozilla firefox 3 browser, it was almost like using a laptop for browsing websites with the wonderful manipulation modes in the browser, and the X-trerminal in the device allows you to install any other application and browsers on top of the existing once. i was quite very convinced with performance of this device and is a true master piece (atleast compared to S60 and windows mobiles)..i like it and i will buy it..
ohh by the way its pre-booking priced Euro 576 in the Helsinki, Finland stores and i am very much sure the actual cost will be must lesser, and will be much lesser when released in the US giants market.

  45. I had an iPhone for 26 days and returned it.
I want this and I’m waiting for it. I hope the release date is mentioned here when it is announced.

The reason you want this instead of an 800 or 810 is 3G. Waiting until you’re near Wi-Fi makes it much less useful.

Does anyone know if I can subscribe to just any 3G provider? AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile?

Will I be able to download apps the way I can in Ubuntu? Will there be a large repository of Linux apps to choose from?

Will the Flash player work with YouTube?

By jtgd on Sep 16, 2009

  46. Even the web browser on my N82 can player videos on YouTube. No doubt N900 will be better. What is more interesting to me is whether its flash player can play swf games.

  56. what I want?
    * something asap!
    * I’ve been waiting for a phone that’s having as good user-friendly interface as all its past models. there are too many logical features list from past nokia models.
    * cheap, US$100? contract is ok
    * not too big (nokia should have 1 model for those who like bigger screens;current one should be cheap!)
    * not laggy.
    * don’t be like Iphone…. please have at least a bit of (or at least slight) variation for different models… can’t imagine why can people live with same things all over and all around! people will soon start wearing uniform yet enjoying that too?

Last but not least, price is too high, $500 is reasonable and acceptable.
    I’m from VietNam BTW.

  60. After the insulting and humiliating experience that was the N96, that I’m stuck with until next October on my contract, I’ll never go Nokia again. They release handsets every other week it seems, and once new ones are released, the existing owners of superceded models are left unsupported with buggy phones. Anyone who pays 750 for this new N900, must want their head reading. I would like to see Nokia fail miserably after my experience with their smartphones. cheap, plasticky rubbish. I’m so sick of this smartphone era. I’ll be keeping my netbook handy, and buying a ruggedized candybar style simplephone next. a phone is a phone, not a computer, and never will be. smartphones are nothing more than gimicky toys. fact.

By matthew bradley on Dec 21, 2009

  61. The Nokia N900, which we used for a week, runs on Maemo 5, a lightweight version of Debian, one of the major Linux distributions that Nokia chose to Android. An ambitious strategy, even foolhardy for a Nokia is increasingly isolated on the front of the smartphone. But moreover, it was dealing with a telephone, an Internet Tablet or a Pocket PC? The manufacturer of mobile computer speaks and highlights the “extreme speed and unparalleled performance” of its mobile. The camera will be available in early December in The Phone House stores, for about 650 euros, excluding subscription promotion.
